Giant ring structure definition and enhancement methods

Giant ring structure (GRS) definition methods and the software programs used to define them  are explained. The picture enhancing techniques described below work well for all images, geological or non-geological. All interested geoscientists (and others) will be able to generate excellent structural data from basic raw data.

The huge breadth of the topic means this website is being put together like a jigsaw, piece by piece, starting with simple interpretation of the GRS through raw geology, Landsat, magnetics gravity and other data. Each GRS will be described and thus the whole picture of the Yilgarn will be put together – bit by bit – in time.

Giant ring structure independent co-incident evidence 

Structures that are proving, on the field and by desktop studies, to be geologically real are being found. This paper demonstrates that the magnetics highlight the Cauden central surficial geology rings and that these rings correlate with the median rings observed on the enhanced surficial geology image. This overlying concentric nature of the median rings in the magnetics and the surficial geology in the centre of the Cauden GRS is independent co-incident evidence of the reality of these structures.

Giant ring structure and mineralisation correlation

Gold mineralisation appears to be associated with the intersection of the median rings with the NNW Southern Cross greenstone belt. Very early work by Ellis in 1938 recognised and carefully mapped the dome and basin structures, caused by cross-folding, which was considered important in the mine areas. Southern Cross mining field (SX) lies on the junction of the outer median ring (C) and the Southern Cross greenstone belt. The Marvel Loch mining centre (ML) lies at the junction of the greenstone belt and the inner median ring (B). The Yilgarn Star – Nevoria field (YS) lies on the inner dark ring. These mines correlate with some of the cross-folds reported by Ellis in 1938. The Bounty mine lies near the junction of the greenstone belt and the southern arc of inner median ring C.

There are exploration opportunities where these rings intersect the other greenstone belts forming domes and saddles..
